Founded in the 1960s as a recreational benefit for Convair aerospace employees, the Convair Sailing Club reinvented itself as a member-owned, all-volunteer nonprofit open to the public when General Dynamics left San Diego. Today the club operates a fleet of 16 sailboats — 21ft Victory sloops and 23ft Pearson Ensigns — docked at Harbor Island West Marina on San Diego Bay. Members sail at their own pace, receive instruction, race competitively, and enjoy monthly BBQs and social events. Described by members as the best-kept secret in San Diego sailing.
