Founded in 2014, Billion Oyster Project is a NYC-based nonprofit working to restore one billion oysters to New York Harbor by 2035. With nearly 15,000 volunteers and 150 million oysters already restored, the organization runs recurring public volunteer days on Governors Island where people clean shell substrate, build concrete reef balls, and support oyster nurseries. An Ambassador program offers deeper long-term roles for committed volunteers, while community water quality testing and shoreline cleanups run all season across the five boroughs.
