Way back in the 1930s, decades before chair lifts and man-made snow made skiing an ‘industry,’ the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) included a group of die-hard mountain climbers and skiers known as “Appies” who were among the very first to explore the mountains of the Northeast on skis. The Appies would apply strips of seal skin to the bases of their 7-foot-long hickory wood skis and climb the White Mountains to ski back down. In New York’s Adirondack Mountains, a Norwegian named Herman ‘Jackrabbit’ Johannsen popularized skiing in what is now the Adirondack Park’s High Peaks Wilderness Area, going out on legendary ski tours from Lake Placid all the way to the summit of Mount Marcy and back—35 miles in a single day!
